COLLEGE FAIR:  SEPTEMBER 30th

(See below for details)

From the Counselor’s Desk:                               September 9, 2010 Issue 2

I hope the beginning of your senior year is going well.  I know some of you are already applying to colleges and scheduling college visits, this is great.  If you are planning to attend college, you need to start narrowing down your choices.  You also need to consider what major or majors you want to consider, so that you can choose a college that is right for you.  Once you have narrowed your choices you will want to acquire applications from the college(s) in which you are most interested.  Many colleges are going paperless and the application process is completed online.  We will take all seniors to USAO for the area COLLEGE FAIR on Friday, September 24.  We will leave at 8:15 am and return by lunch.  Several colleges from all over Oklahoma and surrounding states will be there to answer your questions about their campus.

  • IMPORTANT DATE:  COLLEGE FAIR, SEPTEMBER 24TH AT USAO.  Buses will leave at 8:15 and return by lunch.  Look for College Fair Questions form is box to help you make the most of this visit.
  • Just a note of advice:  Be aware of possible scholarship scams.  There are some individuals that say that they can get you scholarship dollars if you submit a fee.  There is no reason to pay someone to find you scholarship dollars.  You can do the work yourself; it just takes time on your behalf.  Utilize the websites and other resources that you receive from me.  Some of these scams end up soliciting student loans, so be careful.
  • I have put several checklists and other helpful resources in your box to help you as you are making choices about college and financial aid.  Please take advantage of them and use them.
  • The next ACT Test that is available for registration is October 23.  The registration deadline is September 17.  The cost is $33.00 and ACT strongly suggests that you register online.  Registration information is available on the west wall in my office.  Do not wait to take the test until June.  I would recommend the October testing date because some awards and scholarships have an early registration date and require ACT scores.
  • SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY:  WENDY’S HIGH SCHOOL HEISMAN:  If you compete in at least one sport and have a 3.0 average you may apply.    Go to www.wendysheisman.com for more information.  Application is due by October 3, 2010.
  • If you are interested in attending the University of Tulsa the early application date is November 1, 2010.  The Priority Deadline for Academic Scholarships is February 1.  If you need more information you may call:  800-331-3050.
  • If you are interest in attending the University of Oklahoma you may visit the following website:  go2.ou.edu.
  • If you are interested in attending MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) a representative will be in Oklahoma City on Thursday, September 30, 2010.  They would like to meet you and your family and answer any questions that you may have about MIT.  The meeting will be:

Thursday, September 30, 7:00 PM
Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics, Auditorium
1141 N. Lincoln Blvd.
Oklahoma City

  • If you are planning to play a NCAA or Division One sport, please make sure you register with the NCAA Clearing House.  You will need to have your ACT scores sent directly to NCAA by using the college school code 9999 when registering for the ACT.  To register with the NCAA go to:  www.eligibilitycenter.org.
  • Make sure you keep copies of all applications and forms submitted to colleges.
  • Check out the following websites.  They can be helpful for financial aid and preparing for college:

            www.collegeanswer.com

            www.scholarshipexperts.com

            www.fastweb.com

            www.finaid.org

            www.okhighered.org

www.scholarships.com

            www.fafsa.ed.gov

Please come see me, if you need help or need transcripts sent to a college(s).

Your counselor,

Connie Traxler
