From the Counselor’s Desk:                                                                      January 11, 2012      Issue 6

It is time to buckle down and start making some decisions about your future.  It is time to get your personal resume completed.  Your resume can be used for college applications, career tech., or employment.  If you have not compiled a resume you may want to check out the OKCIS website.  It is a wonderful resource for creating a resume, building a portfolio, ACT practice tests, and even scholarship information.  The web address is okcis.intocareers.org.  Also, if you are planning to attend college and have narrowed your choices contact the college(s) of interest and seek out any scholarships that may be available to you.  You also need to pay attention to application and scholarship deadlines, most freshman scholarship deadlines are due either February 1 or March 1.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR FINANCIAL AID:  If you are planning to attend college, FAFSA forms must be submitted as soon as possible.  It is important that your parents file their taxes early, so that you can complete the FAFSA application process.  You need your parents’ tax return for 2011 to complete the application process.  It is strongly encouraged to complete the process on-line to expedite the process.  You will need a pin number before you can complete the application.  To obtain your pin number, additional information, or to complete the application go to:  www.fafsa.ed.gov.

IMPORTANT DATES:

·    January 13 is the early registration date for the February 11, ACT Test.  If you plan to go to college, and have not taken the ACT Test you need to take this test.

·    January 26 at 7:00 pm “PAYING FOR COLLEGE 101” (SEE DETAILS BELOW)

LOOKING FOR WAYS TO PAY FOR COLLEGE?  A seminar called “PAYING FOR COLLEGE 101” will be held Thursday, January 26 at 7 pm in Station 82 inside the Student Center on the campus of the University of  Science Arts of Oklahoma in Chickasha.  This is a free event and is open to the public and no RSVP is required.  This is to help inform and answer questions that students and parents may have.  Representatives from the area colleges and the Oklahoma State Regents office will be the presenters.  It is not for marketing any one institution.

You may call 405-574-1357 for more information.

COLLEGE DAY INFORMATION:  You may receive two college visits during your senior year.  To receive an excused absence you need to complete the College Day form and have it signed by Mr. Odam or Mr. Ragsdale prior to your visit, have a college representative sign it on the day of your visit, and then return it to Mrs. Garrett.

ACT PREP COURSE:  Is offered each Saturday prior to national ACT Test Date.  The cost is $90. on the University of Oklahoma campus.  You may register online:  youth.ou.edu.

LETTER(S) OF RECOMMENDATION:

Students if you need a letter of recommendation please consider who you may wish to write the letter and give them ample time to prepare the letter.  Administrators and teachers are very busy as well.  An information sheet was placed in your box previously and is very helpful to those that you may ask to write a letter for you.  This gives the writer a more personal look at your goals and accomplishments.  You may duplicate the information sheet if more is needed.

OTHER INFORMATION:

  • Please let me know if you need a transcript sent to a college, I will be glad to get it sent for you.
  • Do not wait till next spring to take your ACT, early college admission deadlines are February 1 and March 1 and many scholarships are tied to these dates and require an ACT score to apply.
  • Make sure you keep copies of all applications and forms submitted to colleges.
  • Do not pay a company to find a scholarship for you.  You have access to the same resources they do.
  • If you are planning to play NCAA or Division 1 sport, please make sure you register with the NCAA Clearing House.  You will need to have your ACT scores sent directly to NCAA by using the college school code 9999 when registering for the ACT.  To register with the NCAA go to:  www.eligibilitycenter.org
  • Check out the following websites.  They can be helpful for financial aid and preparing for college:
