CLASS RANK / VALEDICTORIAN / SALUTATORIAN
Class ranks are used to show where a student stands
academically in relation to the other members of his /her graduating
class. The student who has the highest G.P.A is number one in the class
and is named Valedictorian. The student with the second highest G.P.A is
number two and is named Salutatorian. There will be only one
Valedictorian and Salutatorian per graduating class unless there is a
mathematical tie.
Class rank is often presented with the student's place
in the class followed by the total number of students in the class
(e.g., 35/96). Because many scholarships stipulate that a student must
be in the top 10% (or 30%, etc.) of his /her class, class rank can be
very important for students who are applying for scholarships.
