SCHOLARSHIPS

The majority of scholarships available to students come from the post-secondary institution in which a student enrolls. Many are based on academic performance, however, there are scholarships awarded to students with special talent (music, art, drama, athletics), and leadership ability. The counselor assists students with scholarship opportunities and makes every effort to inform students of scholarships by several methods. Seniors are assigned a mailbox and are requested to check it regularly; as such information is disseminated in this manner and by way of announcements in the bulletin. A log is kept in the counselor's office of all scholarships that have been sent to the school. Students may request to see this list of scholarships at any time, as well as applications for those scholarships. Some local scholarships are given, and students are informed of them by the methods listed above.

The counselor keeps view books, catalogs, and admissions forms to most Oklahoma colleges and universities. The Internet is an excellent resource for information about colleges and scholarships, and students can request information bye-mail.

OHLAP is a program established by the legislature to assist low-income students with their tuition for college. To be eligible one must be an Oklahoma student in the 8th, 9th or 10th grade whose family income is not more than $50,000. The student must graduate with a cumulative Grade Point Average of at least 2.5. S/he must also complete a 17-unit curriculum and agree to certain other requirements. It is the responsibility of the student to seek out information about OHLAP, secure application forms, fill out and return paper work by deadline dates, and maintain eligibility. For more information, see the counselor.
